      <image:title>Classes - Creative Writing Grades 6-8</image:title>
      <image:caption>This 10-week course focuses on short fiction and poetry. I begin every class by gently guiding students through a five to ten-minute body scan. This exercise involves each student engaging in deep, intentional breathing to regulate and relax their body while indirectly noticing thoughts, allowing emotions, and directly focusing attention on fully settling into their body and becoming fully present with both their internal and immediate external environments. Afterwards, we spend a few minutes discussing how each person is feeling physically and emotionally before transitioning into the lesson. The benefit of doing this simple yet profoundly soothing and healing exercise is to help students establish a positive association with studying new skills and acquiring new abilities. A positive association means students can feel emotionally, mentally, and physically healthier through forming a solid heart-mind-body connection. As a result, students can have a better chance at achieving higher rates of overall personal success.   After we have collectively become present as a group, we transition into the lesson for the day followed by fun writing activities. We end class by taking a moment to consider and share one thing for which we are grateful.</image:caption>
